IPE
Tabebuia Serratifolia
IPE is the finest exterior decking material available. A rich, deep brown color,
it is virtually knot-free with incredible strength and durability properties.
IPE is a very dense, close-grained wood that when left in its natural state will
turn a soft silver color as it ages. IPE is superior in every way when compared
with other wood and synthetic decking.
- Five times as hard as Yellow Pine
- Naturally durable and insect-resistant
for an expected life of more than 50 years
- Resistant to splitting, twisting,
cupping and checking
- Highly stable, virtually no movement in
service
- Fire Rating is Class A NFPA, Class 1
UBC
IPE grows throughout most countries in Central and South America. Although
residential decking is the most common use, IPE can replace treated wood in many
applications, providing a decay and insect resistant product without the use of
chemicals.

JATOBA
(BRAZILIAN CHERRY) Hymenaea Courbaril
Texture is medium to rather coarse; grain mostly interlocked. Sapwood is usually
wide, white, gray or pinkish. Heartwood is salmon red to orange brown when
fresh, becoming russet to reddish brown when seasoned, marked with dark streaks.
Wood is rated slightly difficult to air dry - it seasons at a fast to moderate
rate with only slight check and warp. The wood is moderately difficult to saw
and machine due to its density, but except in paling it can be machined to a
smooth surface. Somewhat difficult to plane because of the interlocked grain.
Easy to glue and finish satisfactorily. Lab evaluations rate the wood very
resistant to brown rot and white-rot fungi; actual field exposure trials also
rate the wood as very durable. Heartwood is rated as very resistant to dry-wood
termites; it has little resistance to marine borers. Jatoba is widely used as
flooring, please see our Hardwood Flooring page Jatoba has many additional uses
such as tool handles, turnery, millwork and cabinetwork, cross ties, specialty
items.
